The most disturbing aspect of the attack on Jabari Shaw by US Marshals, FBI & OPD earlier this month is the complete disregard on the part of law enforcement for the safety and survival of Anniyah Shaw, Jabari’s 4 year old daughter, who was sitting in the back seat of the car during the attack. The aggressive pursuit by law enforcement of a vehicle containing a 4 year old child exposes the key contradiction of state-controlled policing agencies. While their explicitly stated purpose is to keep innocent people safe, this kind of ruthless disregard for the life of a young Black child lets us know with certainty that their primary objective has nothing to do with safety.

As a result of this attack, 4 year old Anniyah’s leg was broken in two places; she is currently confined to wheelchair and may have to undergo an invasive surgical procedure. Furthermore, she was undoubtedly deeply traumatized by the event, which culminated with US Marshals pointing guns in her face and dragging her out of the destroyed vehicle.

CRC stands in solidarity with Anniyah Shaw and ALL Black children who are traumatized by State violence before they’re even old enough to read. In order to ensure the physical and psychological safety of our children, we must develop the capacity to keep our own families and communities safe. We must shift power from the cops to the community so that Black children no longer have to live in fear of the police.
